| 1968 | A Delta Airlines jet carrying 169 passengers is hijacked over Florida and forced to land in Cuba. This was the start of a wave of hijackings to Cuba (only the hijacker could have a weapon so passengers were defenseless). The government instituted much tighter security at airports with metal detectors and other nuisances which brought the problem under control.
